What is Narcan/Naloxone?

Narcan is a safe, highly effective antidote to Opioid overdose from opioids including heroin, prescription pain medications like Vicodin, Oxycodone, and medically assisted treatment options like Methadone and Buprenorphine.

How does it work?

It binds to the same receptors in the brain that receive heroin and other opioids; it “kicks out” the opioids and reverses the respiratory depression that leads to death from overdose.  Narcan cannot get a person high and has no potential for abuse.  Naloxone is not a controlled substance.  Narcan is on the World Health Organization’s Model List of Essential Medicines.

Who Can Administer Narcan/Naloxone?

According to Illinois’ Overdose Prevention Act, any layperson 18 years of age or older can be trained.  This will allow them to possess and administer Narcan to a person having an overdose.
